CHAPTER FIVE

BLAZE

I watched Sinclair talk with his friend – or maybe they weren't friends from the way they snapped at each other like so many seagulls fighting over another bird.

Or perhaps I was the one they were fighting over. Either way, his friend gave me the creeps. Nahi sneaked up onto my shoulder, caressing my cheek with tiny feet and blue flames. I cupped my hands around him as he started to glow. Playing peekaboo with these men wasn’t on my to-do list. That was another term I learned from one of my stolen books.

Sinclair promised to come back tomorrow for a sunrise breakfast if he could get away. We both knew he had limited time left on the island, do whatever job he was supposed to do. His work wouldn't allow him to be alone forever. But he might spare a few hours, and I had to come up with a plan of how to leave this place.

My collection of trinkets called to me as I scooped Nahi off my shoulder and let him run around the top of the case, running my fingers over an ornate headdress, its palm fronds drooping sadly. “Will you be able to come with me? I think maybe we will set his house alight."

Part of me desperately wanted to see Sinclair’s home.

Part of me was terrified of being chopped into pieces.

Such a pleasant thought.

His voice tripped through my head. “And stewed?” I loved his twisted sense of humor that matched so closely to mine. He wasn’t scared of me. He hadn’t run. And...he was at least as brave as the last warriors who breached my shores.

My solar panel has been charging all day. I managed to push it through a crack above the cave while Sinclair steadied it from the outside. It might glint at surface level, but no more than any other metal left on the destroyed surface of my island. Eventually, I would have to clean and wash it. But it powered up nicely to charge my ereader and that was what I wanted most right now. It was. Definitely.

I’d found the case after a ship wrecked on my small reef a small eon ago, waiting until the tide was low enough for me to touch the soggy leather without turning blue. Nothing of its contents survived bar a piece of paper with two people’s blurred faces and tatty, matted lump that might have been considered clothes once. But once I dried the case out, I stowed my headpieces and medallions and my grass skirts in it. Protected a little from the heat and in the coolest section of my cave, the case preserved my treasures.

My only worry would be if the volcano erupted, but I didn't think that would happen for a long time, if ever. For this one to spew its contents on the world the ground would have to shift and move significantly. My feet spoke of its sleep, and my island would remain for now.

But not forever.

No. The idea of escaping the island with Sinclair Kincaid drew me back to the case.
